Directed by Martin Downs

Performing on February 25, 2025

Summary

The pirate captain Flaminia chases down her adversary Pantalone, who has returned to the home of his long lost daughter Lucia seeking her inheritance. Flaminia, who dreams of the comforts of home, and Lucia, who dreams of adventure, are instantly smitten. Lucia runs away to sea with Flaminia. Angered by this, Pantalone kidnaps Lucia, with the help of his discount bodyguard Capitano. Miscommunications, despair, and chaos ensue as the lovers try to find each other. All is resolved by a surprise reveal from Arlecchino. Lucia becomes part of Flaminia’s crew, and Pantalone and Flaminia vow to continue battling each other on the high seas.

Character Descriptions

The characters represent the "stock characters" of Commedia dell'Arte, and the exaggerated version of everyday people we all know. They have real wants and needs, but are played at an 11. The lovers in particular are serious to the point of a fault - they are practically in the wrong play.

LST will consider all ages, genders, and races for each role.

Flaminia (F) - a pirate captain who dreams of settling down.
Lucia (F) - a homebound lover who dreams of adventure.
Pantalone (M) - An old man who arrives, claiming to be Lucia's long-lost father
Dottore (M) - The doctor & deckhand on Flaminia's ship. Full of himself, but well-intentioned.
Columbina (F) - Flaminia's right hand on the pirate ship, capable and shrewd but with a kind heart.
Arlecchino (M) - Lucia's loyal (if gullible) servant of many years, tasked to look after her
Capitano (M) - The swaggering "bodyguard" of Pantalone, whose bark is bigger than his bite.

Background

The concept for this show started as a crazy "What if...?" among actors in a previous show, but it quickly solidified as a strong contender for this reading. Commedia is at its best when updating traditional narratives and characters to a modern social context.
